Abstract
Background: The elderly are an age group that is susceptible to increased uric acid levels due to changes in body metabolism. This condition can trigger gout arthritis (GA) which is characterized by joint pain and impaired mobility. Non-pharmacological management such as isometric exercise is an easy, safe, and effective alternative therapy to reduce uric acid levels and improve the comfort of the elderly. Objective: To determine the effect of isometric exercise on reducing uric acid levels in the elderly with GA. Method: This study used a descriptive analytical case study approach to two elderly clients at Panti PSBDBB 2 Cengkareng, West Jakarta. The intervention in the form of isometric exercise was carried out for 3 consecutive days, 1 time per day with a duration of 15–20 minutes. Uric acid level examinations were carried out before and after the intervention. Results: Isometric exercise gave positive results in reducing uric acid levels. Client I experienced a decrease from 9,9 mg/dL to 5.4 mg/dL, while client II from 7.2 mg/dL to 5.6 mg/dL. In addition, joint pain was also reduced, and daily activities became smoother. Conclusion: Isometric exercise is effective as a non-pharmacological intervention in meeting the safety and comfort needs of elderly with GA. Suggestion: Further research is recommended to involve a larger number of respondents and extend the duration of the intervention in order to obtain more significant results.
